Accession

The TV set in the old house was on, and the BBC's Royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell was describing how Prince Charles had finally risen to the throne, and - now that he was the King - he had taken the unusual step of changing his name.

He did not want to be "King Charles the Third." From the day the crown settled on his head, his name from this day forth was to be "Ell."

He reasoned that it would give British squaddies the most terrifying battle cry during wartime in history.

"FER ENGLAND!
FER SAINT GEORGE!
FER ..."

At that point, the TV was switched off.
