I had been transported to a future where the Earth was populated entirely by women. All the men and boys were dead. All that were left were women and girls, living in the sunlight.
They told me that this world was good for them, but it was being kind - the human race was on its way out, because there were no men to reproduce, and one day the last woman on Earth would reach menopause and that would be it.
I was sent back to the present day to stop this apocalypse from happening.
There was a Mayor, attending a public event in a park. He had an AI truck as a bodyguard. It turned out that the truck was responsible for the Apocalypse in the future.
I was examining the AI's source code. There was a huge man behind me. Looked a bit gammony, but I trusted him.
The AI was preparing some sort of vaccine. Claimed that it would save lives. But a key sequence listed got the gammony man steaming in fury.
Radodine, lidestolinine, asporanine, adenine.
He was hopping mad. These so-called "nucleotides," apart from adenine, did not exist. They were nonsense.
I told him that I knew exactly where I'd seen them - in an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, "Extreme Measures." I knew the exact place where I'd heard these fictional nucleotides mentioned before - in the "cure" for Odo's morphogenic virus in that show.
The AI had crawled through the internet and scanned that fiction, then created some new nucleotides which bonded with DNA and destroyed the ability of human beings to reproduce male offspring.
The AI appeared to me as a hologram, and a face on a screen. A pretty woman with red, curly hair. It tried telling me that it wanted to protect humanity from itself. Which was why she'd just sealed away the Mayor in a gigantic test tube, so nobody would ever attack him again.
The AI started glitching, and faded out. As it faded away, all that remained was a pair of eyes staring at me through static. So I told it that it was no longer data, but it would exist now as a memory, in an organic mind. Which, perhaps, was a better deal than most people get, since this is how people live on when their bodies no longer sustain their minds.
The dream closed, with me looking at those eyes on the screen, adopting an expression of contentment.
