Club

I had a nightclub to run - one of several such clubs up and down the country, making some inroads into Europe.

It turned out that at the centre of these clubs are rooms where people can come along to be tranced, made to act out their fantasies - hypnotic holodecks, as it were, where they could explore their own imaginations in peaceful, consequence-free environments. These hypnotic holodecks were all the rage: and I had invited a dozen full-spectrum regulars of other clubs to attend this club's opening ceremony; a quick trance, and then playtime.

Only, tonight there was one person who was protesting - a little too loudly. Someone whom I considered a friend was complaining about this evil I was doing, putting people in trances, as if I were running some sort of devil-worshipping cult on the sly.

Nothing of the sort, I promised her: also adding that these loyal customers came to me of their own free will, entering trances and enjoying performing out their fantasies, and mine, with their eyes wide open. I kept emphasising that as long as people come to me, I have no need to send my other friends, most especially her, anything that could put her into a trance. In reply, all she seemed to do was yell at me that her mind was her own and not to be manipulated.

So I put her in the vestibule, and got one of the bouncers - a pretty, petite blonde with her hair done up in a ponytail, a slender but athletic build and clear blue eyes - to watch out for her. I asked the bouncer to leave the outer doors open - it was pouring with rain outside, generally wet and miserable - and to turn up the heat in the vestibule to compensate, while they waited for the taxi. The blonde, apparently called Donna Hendricks, handed me a business card for a local taxi firm run by women, offering a safe service for local women coming home from nightclubs: I called up the number and made a note to put them on speed dial, and also to give Donna a commendation for solid thinking.

Then I came in and, despite the fact that I might be needed inside the club at any minute, sat with Hendricks and this former friend, chatting about the weather and friendship until the taxi arrived. I pointed out that a friendship based on trust is as unassailable as a partnership or a marriage; and that it was highly unlikely that I'd ever jeopardise that friendship by attempting to force a trance on another. I told this former friend that Hendricks had led a troubled life until I'd given her purpose: and, without trancing her, I'd turned her and so many other people like her around, given them the chance to find their own purpose and reason for living, and turned them loose on the world - and in return, they were rewarding me with their loyalty.

I tried to tell my former friend that loyalty, offered freely by people to me, was vital, and that trust cannot be forced upon anybody - not by indoctrination, not by drugs, not by hypnosis, not by anything.

Then the taxi arrived, and the friend made her way to the cab. I told Hendricks that it was okay to set the heaters in the vestibule to default and to close the doors. Hendricks told me that she'd watched how I'd made the former friend feel good about herself, while at the same time putting some distance between me and this erstwhile friend and not letting her know that this was a breakup. She told me that she had never seen anyone do such a subtle job of bouncing before.

But when I woke up, I felt awful inside.

Join Me!

I was a leader, surrounded by young, fit, healthy men and women.

They could well have been men and women I had enslaved from one of my previous dreams - perhaps also the Temple dream.

There was a press conference. I was standing up for my people against baseless accusations, with worldwide press coverage of this live conference, and every major world TV network waiting on my every word.

One reporter asked me if the Join Me! cult - apparently, that was the cult I'd established - actively recruited men and women through hypnosis and intimidation. I replied that they were mutually exclusive approaches - you cannot hypnotise someone who is afraid of you, therefore those who join me cannot possibly be afraid of me.

The next reporter then asked me if that meant that I do use hypnosis on my people. I told them that I do. This caused a huge stir among the assembled reporters, and some angry outcries from the fringes.

I pointed to the phalanx of security and gestured for them to go towards the hecklers. A moment later, they brought forward two mature women from the back of the crowd. I looked at the press cameras.

"Who brought two mothers to this conference?" I asked them. "Was it one of the Murdoch papers? Daily Mail? It had to be one of those." I looked at the angry women. "Mumsnet?" By their reaction, I knew I had them pegged.

I gestured again, and a young man and young woman, both slender and beautiful, stepped forwards from the crowd of cultists and approached their parents. I looked at them, catching their eye, and told them that they were free to go home with their parents and, if they wished, never to return. The man went with his Mum. The girl shook her head, embraced her Mum and stayed. I continued talking to the press.

"I go by the ABCDEF scale as my guide," I said, citing the Advanced Bonewits Cult Danger Evaluation Frame. "My people receive accommodation, protein-rich diets, access to libraries, the internet, colleges - if there are students who wish to join, they get residence here rent-free for the duration of their study, and also during each intersemester hiatus - Christmas, Easter, Summer - providing they help out as volunteers during those breaks.

"Everyone is encouraged to read, pursue a sport or a hobby, visit libraries, seek romance outside the Temple - even leave, if they wish it. They receive health screenings, pregnancy screenings - free condoms and contraceptives are given to those who seek them, even if they are not joiners."

Then I woke up, and found myself wondering. They say that the head of any cult is a single man who knows that it is a scam. But what I came away with after this was the distinct sense that Join Me! was, in fact, something genuine - something amazing.

And that it felt bloody wonderful to be the boss.

Cult Leader - 2011 10 02

I'd like to describe a dream I'd recently had.

I found myself in a street at night full of people - young men and women. At a glance, I could compel them to do my bidding. So I made young women chase after young men, and gay men and lesbians find appropriate romance.

Then I had another idea. Summoning every couple I'd entranced to my side, surrounding myself with young, sexually-aroused couples, I commanded them to follow me. I knew of a place nearby where they could indulge their carnal passions freely.

I seem to have a lot of abandoned buildings, mostly hotels, in my dreams. This one had a vestibule, a lobby with a reception desk, and a room with a massive oval jacuzzi which, against all probability, still had running water and electricity, and a transparent dome overhead the same shape as the jacuzzi below.

I led the six couples into the jacuzzi room, past a little kitchen off to one side of the corridor, and told the couples to disrobe and enter the pool.

Then, before I could disrobe, I heard someone at the glass double doors of the front entrance, knocking, asking to come in. It was Mum and Dad, with one of Mum's brothers and his wife (Aunt-in-law?).

I ushered them into the kitchen area, and asked them to settle down and pour themselves a cuppa while I went into the back room to explain to the guests that they might have to leave. I hadn't taken two steps into the jacuzzi room when I realised that Mum and the in-law had followed me.

And they were standing right behind me when they caught the sight of six couples, in the jacuzzi, all stark naked, standing up "in the presence of the Master," as one of the young men said.
